York Selectmen agree to start GHG inventory, join ICLEI

At Monday’s Selectmen meeting, the board voted unanimously to spend $600 to join the ICLEI association and begin the work of measuring the town’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions on an annual basis.

Hanna Mitchell – who will be in York until February – has agreed to begin the hard work of compiling billing records and entering them into the ICLEI software.  When she leaves, another volunteer/intern will need to be found to continue the work.

A steering committee made up of various stake-holders will convene in January to determine next steps.  Ted Little has volunteered to be the elected official liason to ICLEI while the GHG inventory is under way.  We would also like representatives from the schools, sewer, water, local businesss and the faith community to join us on this committee.

The results of the inventory will be helpful in pointing the way towards the best places to make efficiency improvements in town operations.

Good work, Eric, in keeping this project moving forward. And thanks to Hanna for agreeing to do some of the important leg work.

We do need a 'new economy,' but one that is founded on thrift and care, on saving and conserving, not on excess and waste. An economy based on waste is inherently and hopelessly violent, and war is its inevitable by-product. We need a peaceable economy.
