An important effort to protect our environment:
Bring Your Own Bag York, a citizen action committee, launches initiative to encourage use of reusable shopping bags –
In an effort to combat the escalating plastic pollution crisis – a new citizen action committee has formed to address the use of plastic shopping bags. Calling themselves and their effort, BYOB York – their mission is to reduce single-use plastic bags in York by encouraging people to switch to re-usable shopping bags.
Hannafords in York has been making an effort in this direction for years by providing bags for purchase. A goal of BYOB York is to expand that kind of thinking throughout as many points of sale as possible in York. BYOB York also endeavors to help the community as a whole commit to the use of reusable shopping bags. It’s easy once the habit is formed and ultimately will save the shopper the money currently passed on by distributors.
The following is the group’s mission:
To reduce the environmental hazards from single-use plastic bags, BYOB York promotes bold, collaborative action within our community to achieve a town-wide commitment to:
- Break the bag habit, and
- Shift from single-use bags to reusable ones.
